Bedtime Routine

I really struggled with establishing a “good” sleep routine during the first few months with Olivia, but I eventually figured out what worked for us. Adherence to her routine means that she’ll sleep through the night.

With Logan’s arrival, I’ve realized that routine is going to change. And, let’s face it, no toddler responds well to change. So for this next blog post, I reached out to one of my favourite super moms to hear about how she manages to put down her two kiddos with little-to-no tantrums.

My toddler is now almost two years old and we have established a wonderful bedtime routine. I have found it has been key to keeping him sleeping soundly through the night for 12+ hours! We started this routine from when he was six months old and we have stayed consistent since then. Making a bedtime that is fun for both parents and baby is key for a smooth evening into a great night sleep!

Being a mom of two under two I like to take the team approach when it comes to bed time. It isn’t easy wrangling two hyper kids into bed all by yourself so if you have help use it! It is also a great time to bond as a family. I like to focus on the three B’s for our bedtime routine. We start with a bath, then a book and then bed! For smaller kiddies we add in a fourth B which can be bottle or breast-milk!

BATH TIME
First comes bath time; my son LOVES his bath, always has! I fill up the tub with lots of bubbles and sensory toys. It is also a great chance for learning. We have barnyard animal bath toys where he names them and calls out their sounds and colours, he loves to get silly! I am also teaching him to wash himself which is a great way to teach body parts. Now that his baby brother is getting older he joins in his smaller tub. Once they are all clean I will have my husband supervise play time in the tub while I lay out pj’s and diapers!

I will grab my youngest Bennett out of the tub first since he loses interest quite fast while Lucas stays in to play a bit longer. Both my kiddos have extremely sensitive skin so I like to make sure I apply his lotion and put him in a pair of breathable pj’s. Bamboo cotton is an excellent material for kids with sensitive skin and prone to eczema. It is delicate and breathable so it doesn’t trap in heat and moisture. We got our favorite sleeper from a local shop called Oandlo and the brand is Kyte baby. It is so silky soft, perfect for snuggling and we just love it! You can find here. the set has a matching sleeper cap for those cold nights where your little one needs a little extra something to keep them warm which you can find here.

Once Bennett is bedtime ready I will grab Lucas. He LOVES to brush his teeth and even though he doesn’t do the best job it is still important to establish a habit. He loves to help pick out what pjs he will be wearing to bed and just like Bennett his skin is sensative so we try to aim for a breathable material. He is really into puppies right now so his go to pjs are these silky soft puppy set! You can get find them here.

BOOK TIME
Once both boys are in their pajamas and bedtime ready we like to read a story together. We are in the process of weaning our toddler off of the bottle but we do give him a couple oz at night still while we read a book. Bennett stares wide eyed at the colourful pages but Lucas loves to point everything out and I enjoy quizzing him and encouraging to find different things on the page. We usually read 1-2 books depending on how hyper the kids are. This gives them a chance to wind down and start to feel sleepy.

BED
Lucas has moved over to his toddler bed (I am so proud!) So I tuck him in, give him a kiss and his favorite stuffed animals. He has had a sound machine since he was born which plays sounds of the ocean at night so I turn that on before I leave the room. We have the munchkin brand sound machine which has a built in projector that he loves to watch until he falls asleep. I bring Bennett into the nursery where I feed him one more time before going into his crib. He usually falls asleep while eating and I can transfer him over. He wont sleep the entire night just yet but it is a work in progress!

Keeping this repetitive routine helps the little ones have predictability in their evening. They know with each step that bed time is coming so they can slowly transition to bed and its not an abrupt shock when they go right from play time into bed. I have found that we don’t get many tantrums because he knows after bath time I get a book, then I go to bed. Of course every child will be different but routine is always key! I really hoped that this was helpful for you! I am going to make a list of a few of my bedtimes essentials that you can find linked at the bottom of the page!
